The four month Bell sounds too loud....

Okay, now this is getting too close. Six months ago the 29th April was miles away: "I'll start in a week or so". And so I did. In November in fact. Equipment purchased; bike at the ready. But someone forgot to tell my brain that I'm 50 and that getting ready for challenges that are entirely new will take time!!

So first came the Payne feet (sorry about the photo....) that are too wide and have too wide an arch for clipped cycling shoes. Using clipped pedals was sheer agony and proved to be impossible; then came the Payne achilles heels that do not seemingly flex on a bike properly. The day after each training ride I can't walk......actually can't !! And then of course there's the somewhat under-trained and overweight Payne posterior that just doesn't really fit on a little microscopic bike saddle. At the moment I'm on my third saddle and that still hurts.

So, two months of faffing around doing not a lot except realise that this is one mother of a challenge - and lo and behold all of a sudden, despite the best intentions - it's Xmas and I really haven't done a great deal. Ho Hum. Still can't wear shoes; saddle hurts like hell and achilles still don't stretch out. But hey.........it's only 1,000 miles.

Storms, hurricanes and camaraderie

Some bright spark (me I think, though maybe Tony) had the bright idea to climb Ben Nevis to do some training. Well good idea but not in driving hurricane force winds and torrential rain! Despite the weather (if I had a pound for every time I wondered what I was doing there that day) and despite Brian badly gashing his eye falling on some rocks, everyone had a great time - quite superb actually - especially Saturday night dinner in the Ben Nevis Inn!! Superb. One of the most impressive things was to see the determination and maturity of George and my young boys who just ignored the conditions and got on with it! Great stuff.
